This is the most impressionist part of the poem:
"and when they lay
my shattered bones to rest,
in your memory I’ll be your hero,
no more and no less"

Sydney I have no words to express my gratitude for this poem so I'll just slap my hands as an honour for the text and for the feeling which provokes.
I think that you deserve a star for this wonderful poem!
Congratulations Sydney!

=  Thank you Marius! This reminds me of a film...

Thank you, Marius,

I wrote this as the answer to a request of my husband. I can only write about what I see in films, as I know nothing about war and what the poor soldiers go through, I can only imagine. But, I think it is right to show them as human beings, weak and strong and full of fear and love. Also, this is written for the poor mothers who tremble every time the door bells rings... or the postman comes...
If I were a man, God knows how I would act somewhere out there...fighting to survive. I will never forget this film, forgot the name, but it´s quite well-known, about a battle between Germans and Russians, I think. During a pause in the fighting as the guns were quiet, one Russian sat on a piano which stood in the middle of the battlefield and started to play... soon the Germans played too, sang and all stood side by side as friends...
until the order to shoot was given. In a second, the friends were enemies again, and the singer shot the pianist... not out of choice...
There remains only one thing to say: "WHY????"

=  Why? - hard to give an answer...

It is really tough but the answer you will find it if you will watch the Zeitgeist documentary - I think that movie explains a lot.
Glad to hear you Sydney!
All the best in the world!
