Video game players participate in the creation of violence and are rewarded for it, which reinforces violent behavior in society. Many games, especially "first shooter" ones, inspire young teenagers to commit serious crimes. In games such as Grand Theft Auto III, players win points by murdering people with baseball bats, knives, and guns. Researchers predict that school shootings are the extreme responses of games such as Doom, Resident Evil, Quake, and Wolfenstein. The makers of the Grand Theft Auto series and PlayStation2 are companies that know they are in fact making products that train young people how to kill. Army Lieutenant Colonel Dave Grossman used the same point-and-shoot video games that are sold commercially to condition military personnel to kill. Video games may also add a cardiovascular risk factor to our generation. Research shows that adolescents playing them for several hours have a 36 percent increase in blood pressure. Video games expose children to hostile environments that train them to accept violence as part of their everyday lives. They should be restricted for the common good of all people.
