Babbo, non potrai mai sapere
quanta angoscia mi strinse il cuore,
per la mia disubbidienza, quando sentii
la ruota spietata della locomotiva
mordermi nella carne viva della gamba.
Mentre mi portavano dalla vedova Morris
vidi ancora nella valle la scuola
che marinavo per salire di nascosto sui treni.
Pregai di vivere finché potessi chiederti perdono-
e poi le tue lacrime, le tue rotte parole di conforto!
Dal sollievo di quell’ora mi venne felicità infinita.
Tu fosti saggio a far scolpire per me:
