His career started in the 1760's and he was active until shortly before his death in 1795. He wrote a large number of baccanals called "Fredmans epistlar." - published in 1790 and won some acclaim at the court, but common people and part of the bourgeoisie were his keenest audience. In 18'th century Stockholm there were numerous inns, very often connected to brothels. When Bellman sang and played in these places the audience would sometimes be a curiously mixed one. He was reputed as an outstanding singer, luteplayer and performer. Blessed Stockholm night rags and riches at the inn - Bellman strums his lute
