On a peach and blue sky
the sun is dying
in a pool of deep-red desperation
melting into sleepy trees –
a fading sensation
while the moon looks on
in sandwiched curiosity,
her full face smiling
happily, maliciously –
preying on the other’s sorrow,
the way the jealous
hunt their neighbours,
the strong eat the weak
as their children torture
the innocent for fun –
trusting creatures
without a voice, who have
never learned to be free
and suffer helplessly
until the impenetrable night
spreads soothing silence
over half-swallowed cries
and hides what dawn
shall not hear
and daylight must not see
