They were all waiting impatiently. Then, a metallic voice, speaking like a robot, spread in the air from the loudspeakers. - Three-two-one and there it goes! Indeed, the huge spacecraft was rising to the sky. What was it all about? And what were doing all those people there? They simply wanted to say goodbye and to encourage for the last time four brave young men who accepted to risk their lives for the sake of humanity. It was just three or four seconds until it disappeared in the sky, like a blue thunder. Scientists discovered that in two years a huge asteroid would destroy the Earth. There was no possibility to avoid the danger; the only escape was to find another warm planet, with a breathable atmosphere which could become the humans’ new home. First time scientists thought of Triton, Jupiter’s satellite. A space mission landed on Triton, but it was too cold there and in the air there wasn’t enough oxygen. They tried on Mercury, Venus, even on some of their satellites but no one was capable too replace the earth. They were desperate. NASA first didn’t make public this fact, because they didn’t want to scare people, but in the end they had to do it. People said that the end of time has come. Some of them were digging big holes in the ground, hoping to shelter there. It was a total hysteria. But, after several weeks a beam of light showed up through the darkness; hope began to bloom in people’s hearts. Professor Frederic Weisenbricht had a new solution: it was a planet recently discovered by him. He called it Tydorya. This was humans’ last chance. They had to move somewhere or die crushed by the meteor. The SOS MSAO ("meteor strikes!" astronomic organization) named four volunteers to go on a mission to Tydorya and find out if the planet is habitable. They were two boys and two girls between twenty-two and twenty-six years old. 1 January 2120 “A new year has come and we finally left Tydorya. It’s an excellent planet for we’re trying to do. The air is clean, rich in oxygen; it feels like you breathe the air of our mountains, on Earth. We are happy to return on terra because we are bringing good news. The humanity will be saved!” This is a fragment from the captain’s diary, Alex Marshall. He was optimistic, but unfortunately too optimistic! On Earth, the four explorers were welcomed with joy. Some people started to gather their things and prepare to meet their new home. With tears in their eyes they got into the giant transporters and cargos and they said adieu to their old good mother: Terra. Tydyria was indeed perfect for what humans needed. It was like an Earth’s twin sister. People felt good there. But in 2201 the first case of pathologic combholosis appeared. It a new disease caused by a toxic gas which existed in the air. It was a catching disease. Thousands of millions of people were contaminated even before they could know and they were dying very fast. Soon Tydyria’s population reached only one quarter of the past number of people. And they were still dying. Besides, the big number of dead bodies made the air harder and harder to breathe and caused other infectious diseases. Tydyria now was the real image of Hell. After this disaster just one-two hundreds of humans managed to survive. Scientists think that combholosis was released by careless people who didn’t know that the environment has to be protected and they threw into the rivers some toxic substances. The water vanished into the atmosphere and the toxic vapors in reaction with the gas from the air increased this evil power of destruction. This was the sad story of the Earth and its inhabitants. The class was over, and so the documentary. Ad’ Rohr looked at his desk mate. - It was boring. And those humans, they were such damned stupid creatures. Oh, I hate History! It’s so boring! The teacher heard his words and she came in front of him. - History isn’t a boring subject! It makes you realize the precursors’ mistakes in order not to repeat them anymore. And, besides, if you want to be a good space cadet you have to learn history! Ad’ Rohr sighed. He knew she was right.
