- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 2003-11-21 | | Mirroring by Valeriu Ciubotaru FADE IN: ESTABLISHING SHOTS EXT. BUCHAREST -- AFTERNOON Edge of the city. A poor neighborhood. Broken down streets. Few PEDESTRIANS walking seem like moving statues. Ruined buildings, sad people, everything is gray. Time seems frozen. INT. ATTIC 01 -– CONTINUOUS (REALITY 01) The miserable attic has poor light. In a corner is an improvised bed. The bed clothes have fallen half way down on the floor. DAN 01 (30) sleeps crouched in the shakedown bed. He has big circles under his eyes and a six o'clock shadow. He sweats abundantly. ALINA 01 (20) sits undressed in the other corner of the room. She puts her makeup on impassively. Dan 01 frets and groans in his sleep. Alina 01 stops. She looks indifferently into the mirror to Dan 01 for a second. Then she continues to put on her makeup. FILM TITLE INT. ATTIC 01 -- MOMENTS LATER Alina 01 has a strident makeup on her face. She is already dressed. She looks like a cheap hooker, speaking in a low voice on the phone. She hangs up the phone happily. She takes the wallet from the table and opens it. The wallet is empty. Alina's smile disappears. She throws the wallet on the floor. Dan 01 groans. Alina 01 turns back to Dan 01. Her eyes stop on Dan's trousers. The smile is coming back on her face. Alina 01 goes on tiptoe to Dan 01. She bends carefully over him and reaches for his trousers. Dan 01 groans harder in his sleep. Alina 01 starts. Her bag falls on Dan's head. She takes it back quickly. Dan 01 wakes up heavy with sleep. He looks scared around him. He sees Alina 01 rummaging his trousers. He's standing up slowly. He grips his trousers and draws them to him. Alina 01 looks at him with a superior look. She shakes a little the trousers, smiling. Dan 01 drops the trousers sickly and falls near the bed. Alina01 takes the few bills from Dan's trousers. ALINA 01 Easy babe! …Dream on… DAN 01 My money… ALINA 01 Your money? …You don't need them! DAN 01 …My medicine… ALINA 01 (nervous) What?! For your medicine you want to let me starve? No way!!! Alina takes the money. She hurries to the door with a huge smile on her face. DAN 01 Please… Alina 01 stops out of sorts in front of the door. She turns back nervously to the Dan. Dan 01 looks at her sadly. Dan's face gets even paler. Alina clenches her fist, lifting it in the air. Dan 01 turns his back to her. He sees a pigeon flying over the park through the opened window. Alina 01 stops her fist in mid air. She watches him in great disdain. She takes her head in her arms. ALINA 01 What the fuck did I do to deserve a jerk suck as you… Alina 01 lets down her arms. Observing the watch she starts and hurries up to the mirror, arranging her hair. ALINA 01 You're lucky this time… She gets out the room. Dan 01 continues to stare at the window. His face is contorting with pain. He reaches for a medicine in a paper thin sheet on the commode and swallows it. After a few seconds he seems a little dizzy, but released. He smiles a little and turns his eyes to the door. INT. ATTIC 02 -- EVENING (REALITY 02) The same poor attic with almost similar furniture is now clean, carefully arranged. The attic seems to have a happiness all around it. ALINA 02 opens the door and enters the room. She looks exactly like Alina 01, but she expresses innocence and happiness. DAN 02 stands up. He looks exactly like Dan 01, but he is shaved, without dark rings. He expresses power and happiness. Dan 02 opens his arms wide. Alina 02 jumps in his arms. They fall embraced on the bed. INT. ATTIC 01 -– EVENING (REALITY 01) Dan 01 stares at the door. He smiles. He lays slowly on his back. He closes his eyes. His head slides aside. EXT. PARK 02 -- EVENING (REALITY 02) Dan 02 walks with Alina 02 hand in hand on a back alley. They reach the lake's shore. They stop for a romantic kiss. A purple sun mirrors in the lake's water. A BANG is heard from the nearby trees. Dan 02 and Alina 02 shudder. They look around them. A few pigeons fly away from the trees. Nothing else happens. Alina 02 runs. She stops suddenly near the water. She takes her head in her hand amazed. Dan 02 gets closer to her on tiptoe. He hugs Alina 02 from behind and lifts her up in the air. She struggles nervous and powerless. Dan 02 lets her free, astonished. Alina 02 turns back enraged to Dan 02. He stretches his arms to her. Alina 02 transforms slowly into Alina 01. Dan 02 stands stock still with his arms in the air. Alina 01 looks at him with big repulsion. She pushes Dan 02 away strongly. Dan 02 falls on the ground. Alina 01 runs away in a big hurry. Dan 02 looks astonished after her. Dan 02 takes a little rock and throws it nervously in the water. He takes another rock. He lifts his arm to throw the stone. He stands stock-still with his arm in the air. He stares at the water. The rock falls from his hand in the water. Dan 02 puts the hand on his face. He touches his cheeks. The water is getting clear. Dan 02 watch astonished in the lake's water how he is turning into Dan 01. A few weak muffled SCREAMS are heard from the nearby trees. A harsh BANG comes next. Dan 01 stands up confused. He turns back to the trees. A strong MAN (45) comes out running from the trees. The man has fresh blood on his shirt. He has a knife in his hand. Dan 01 freezes. He looks scared around him. The man stops in front of Dan 01. The man looks carefully around the park. There is no one else there. They size up each other. The man raises threateningly the knife in the air. Dan 01 clenches his fists and raises his arms to protect himself. The man rushes upon Dan 01. Dan tries to block him with his arm but he fails. The man hits Dan 01 strongly with the knife in the abdomen. Dan 01 loses his balance. The man tries to hit Dan 01 again. During his falling, Dan 01 hits desperately the man in the hand that's holding the knife. The knife jumps in the air. Dan 01 collapses to the ground. INT ATTIC 01 -– EVENING (REALITY 01) Dan 01 wakes up scared. The bed-sheet are full of blood along Dan's abdomen area. His face is distorted with pain. He stretches out his arm to the medicine in a paper thin sheet on the commode. It is empty. Dan 01 is disconcerted. He looks undecided around him. A shy smile appears on his face. He searches under the mattress and gets out a few bills. He breathes freely. He makes big efforts to stand up. EXT STREET 01 -- MORNING Dan 01 walks slowly. He help himself walking with an improvised stick. He wears bad clothes. He stops often and leans against the buildings' walls. He is very pale. Dan 01 stops. The roadway climbs over the sidewalk. Suddenly he loses his balance. The buildings starts to dance in front of him. He grows grey with fear. He faints. EXT PARK 02 -- EVENING SLOW MOTION. Dan 01 is falling. He keeps his eyes on the knife flying up in the air. The knife becomes a white pigeon. The clear blue sky becomes cloudy. Everything grows foggy. EXT STREET 01 -- MORNING Dan 01 lies unconscious on the sidewalk. An OLD MAN jolts Dan 01. Dan doesn't react. The old man slaps Dan in the face. Dan 01 opens his eyes. He is scatter-brained. The old man helps Dan 01 to stand up. The old man is talking to Dan, but Dan doesn't hear. INT DRUGSTORE 01 -- DAY A DRUGGIST puts some medicine in a paper bag. Dan 01 pays the bills to the druggist. She gives him back a few coins and the full paper bag. EXT ATTIC 01 -- MOMENTS LATER Dan 01 closes the door behind him. He can hardly stay on his feet. He leans on the wall. He opens the paper bag and looks inside. He shakes all over. He drops the paper bag on the floor. Dan 01 bends towards to the bag. He loses his balance and drops on the floor. He stretches his hand and pulls the bag to him. Dan 01 empties the bag all over the floor. He chooses feverishly a plastic thin sheet medicine. He takes a pill and swallows it. He suffocates with the pill. Dan 01 looks desperately around the room. He sees a half full water bottle on the little table near the mirror. He drags the few steps on the floor to the table. Dan 01 raises his body slowly and leans on the chair. He extends his hand on the little table. He grabs the water bottle and drinks greedily. He puts the bottle down, near him. Dan 01 breathes strongly a few times. His shaking disappears. He raises slowly his body on the chair. Then, he looks to the mirror. He is vexed. The reflection in the mirror is unclear. INT ATTIC 02. -- EVENING Dan 02 sits relaxed in an armchair. He leafs through a magazine. Alina 02 lights three candles on the table. Dan 02 puts the magazine aside. He raises his eyes full of love to Alina. He takes a glass of red wine from the table. Alina 02 searches through the records from the table and chooses one of them. She puts the record in the record player. A slow song plays. Dan 02 puts the glass on the table. Alina 02 comes to him and sits on his knees. Dan 02 stands up with Alina in his arms. They dance embraced closely. INT ATTIC 01 -- NIGHT Dan 01 sleeps agitated. The same slow song plays. Alina 01 dances alone. She is visibly a little drunk. Dan 01 wakes up in pain. He extends his hand to the medicine. He takes a pill and swallows it. He looks around. The water bottle is on the floor near the table. DAN 01 (weak) ...Water... Alina 01 stops dancing. She looks disdainfully to Dan 01. She turns her back to Dan and pumps up the volume. Then, she continues her dance. Dan 01 tenses up his body. His face is contorting with pain. The slow song stops. Alina 01 continues to dance as the music still plays. Dan 01 takes a few more pills and swallows them. DAN 01 I beg you, give me some water please... Alina 01 stops. She turns nervously to Dan 01. She smiles perversely. She comes slowly to Dan 01. Dan 01 looks at her scared. Suddenly he stares astonished. He relaxes and smiles happily. Alina 01 transforms into Alina 02. INT ATTIC 02 -- NIGHT Dan 02 sits on the bed. Alina 02 comes slowly to him letting her shirt fall down. She jumps next to Dan 02 in the bed. They hug and kiss. INT ATTIC 01 -- MORNING Alina 01 sleeps on the edge of the shakedown bed. She wakes up and looks confused around her. Dan 01 sleeps in an unnatural position. Alina gets out of bad. She stumbles against Dan's trousers on the floor. She picks them up and raises them in the air to throw them into Dan's face. Aew coins fall out from trousers' pockets. Alina watches the coins, amazed. She searches feverishly the trousers pockets and finds a bill. She gets angry. She throws them into Dan's face. Dan 01 does not react. Alina 01 gets very angry. She jumps on Dan 01, jolting him violently. ALINA 01 You bastard! How dare you hide money from me? Tell me! Dan 01 doesn't move. Alina 01 hits Dan in the face. ALINA 01 Tell me!!! Dan 01 doesn't move. Alina stops confused. She takes Dan's shoulders and pulls him to her. She jolts Dan 01 violently. Dan 01 doesn't react. Alina 01 freezes scared. Dan 01 falls inertly on the bad. INT ATTIC 03 -- MORNING (REALITY 03) DAN 03 sleeps. He looks exactly the same as with Dan 01 and Dan 02, but he has long hair. Dan 03 writhes in his sleep and falls down on the floor from the bed. He wakes up screaming. He lifts his shirt and checks his abdomen. There is no wound or scar there. Dan 03 looks carefully around the room. The room is also the same with attic 01 and attic 02, but a lot better lighted; the furniture is different. Dan 03 breathes freely. Dan 03 stands up happily. He goes to the mirror. He stops vexed near the table. There is no record-player there, but a CD player and a RECORD without covers. On the table are two glasses half full with red wine and three candles mostly burned. Dan 03 looks at all of them as if those objects shouldn't be there. He freezes with fear. There is an audio CD on the table instead of the record he saw before. Dan 03 takes the CD intrigued. He opens the CD tray, puts the CD in and pushes the play button. The same slow song plays. He is extremely confused. Dan 03 looks around the room. His look stops on the mirror. In the mirror is reflected the ATTIC 02, Dan 02 looking to the mirror and Alina 02 sleeping. INT ATTIC 02 -CONTINUOUS Dan 02 stares at the mirror. In the mirror is reflected ATTIC 01, Dan 01 resting in the bed and Alina 01 crying in a corner. Alina 01 raises her look to the mirror and screams. THE (CONTINUOUS) END
